Die Menschheit sitzt auf einem gigantischen Goldberg. Über 90% des Goldes wird für Schmuck und/oder „Wertaufbewahrung“ verwendet. Wir haben längst genug Gold und die Recyclingquote ist sehr hoch. Trotzdem findet über das letzte Jahrzehnt ein globaler Goldrausch statt, von illegalen Armutsschürfern bis zu irrwitzigen Grossprojekten der Bergbaukonzerne. Die Folgen sind verheerend: Zyanid und Quecksilber werden zur Goldaufbereitung genutzt und verseuchen die Umwelt, töten Menschen. Wertvolle Biotope werden zerstört, Land und Wasser grossflächig vergiftet, toxische Schwermetalle ergiessen sich in die Umwelt. Kinder-/Sklavenarbeit und Todesschwadronen sind typische Begleiterscheinungen.
Noch in den 1990er Jahren wurden wegen des vorübergehenden Goldpreistiefststand viele Goldminen geschlossen. Die globale ökonomische Krise hat jedoch seitdem die Goldpreise auf Rekordhöhen getrieben. Das hat einen weltweiten Goldrausch – geradezu „Goldkrieg“ – mit verheerenden Folgen für Menschen und Natur ausgelöst.
Am häufigsten und schwersten sind dabei die Ärmsten der Armen, (Klein)bauern und indigene Völker, vor allem in den Ländern des Südens, betroffen. Aber es gibt auch Hunderttausende von Menschen, die überall auf der Welt Widerstand leisten: Gegen mörderische Arbeitsbedingungen, Ausbeutung und Terror, Vergiftung und Vernichtung der Umwelt.
